Zinifex confirms duress allegations

ZINIFEX has confirmed a claim from the Workplace Ombudsman alleging undue pressure to four contractors at the then Zinifex Hobart Smelter in 2005.

“We share the Ombudman’s view that duress to any workers in connection with their working conditions is intolerable,” Zinifex’s acting Chief Executive Officer, Tony Barnes said.

“Put simply, this is not the way Zinifex conducts its business. It is contrary to our values and the way the company conducts its high standard of workplace relations,” he said.

Barnes said that Zinifex has only recently received the notice and that the company is taking the allegation extremely seriously.

“We are currently investigating the circumstances of the allegations and will then determine what is the appropriate course of action,” he said.
