Yandi remains closed

BHP Billiton spokesperson Emma Meade has told Australian Mining that operations at Yandi remain suspended following a fatal collision between a light vehicle and a haul truck at the mine site.

According to Meade, the company has progressively restarted Western Australian Iron Ore operations since Friday night, with the exception of Yandi.

The fatal collision, which resulted in the death of a HWE Mining employee, is the second fatal accident at the mine site in recent times.

Police attended the accident scene, according to the company, and BHP Billiton Iron Ore and HWE Mining are working with inspectors from the Mine Safety Directorate.

Yandi is about 140 km northwest of Newman and is operated on BHP Billiton Iron Ore’s behalf by HWE Mining.

The company controls seven iron ore mines in Western Australia’s Pilbara region, and Yandi is the second-largest.

The mine produces about 45 million metric tons a year according to the company.
