Xstrata confirms job cuts at Bowen Basin

Xstrata Coal has confirmed it will cut jobs at its Oaky Creek mine in Queensland’s Bowen Basin.

Contractor positions have been confirmed for the job cuts although it is still not known how many positions will go at the mine, the ABC reported.

Xstrata Coal announced in September that it would be cutting 600 jobs across its Australia coal operations.

At the time, the miner stated it was "undertaking a planned restructuring to respond to industry-wide pressures including low coal prices and high input costs.”

Xstrata spokesperson Francis De Rosa,  told Australian Mining that the company is "currently dealing with a very challenging market and a high Australian dollar, so Xstrata has had to act to ensure the ongoing health of the business.

"This [restructing] is part of an ongoing review."

Xstrata begun cutting coal mine jobs at its Ulan coal mine in NSW's Central West where 40 permanent positions were axed earlier this month along with120 contractor positions.

According to the CFMEU,  Xstrata's Ravensworth coal mine at the Hunter Valley  is also earmarked for around 15 frontline job cuts.
