A contract worker has been seriously inured this morning at Xstrata Zinc’s George Fisher Mine in Queensland.
The Queensland Ambulance Service said a man has been taken to hospital after an accident involving a cement truck running into a loader.
Emergency crews were called to the mine just after 5:00am AEST.
First aid was administered at the scene before the injured man was transported by ambulance to the Mount Isa Base Hospital for treatment, Xstrata said.
The exact nature of the injuries is unknown, but the worker is reported to be in a stable condition.
“The health and safety of our workforce is our highest priority and we are currently providing support to the contractor’s family and colleagues,” Xstrata Zinc Mount Isa executive general manager Kevin Hendry said.
“We are currently investigating the incident with the relevant regulatory authorities.”
Xstrata was forced to temporarily close the George Fisher Mine in May this year after the death of an employee in another workplace accident.
