DRIVERS manoeuvring along the Arnhem Highway were privy to a rather peculiar sight in late January.
A 12 m wide leech feed thickener tank was transported 230 km from Port Darwin to Ranger uranium mine after engineering manager David Broadhurst and project manager Adam Jennians decided to construct the tank in a Darwin factory.
“The cost of construction in a factory was much cheaper than construction on site,” Jennians said.
Transporting the wide load, however, was easier said than done.
According to Jennians, traffic lights and road signs had to be knocked down and re-built.
After an eight hour drive the thickener was delivered and installed on site.
