WA unveils mining department reforms

The Western Australian Government has officially formed the Department of Mines, Petroleum and Exploration (DMPE) to develop the resources sector sustainably and responsibly.

From July 1, DMPE replaces the Department of Energy, Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety (DEMIRS).

DMPE’s structure comprises Geological Survey of Western Australia, Resource Tenure, Resource and Environmental Compliance and Aboriginal Empowerment Unit.

The department will oversee the regulatory and policy requirements of the resources sector by collaborating with representatives from government, community organisations, and industry bodies to provide fair and transparent regulatory practices that balances economic growth and environmental protection.

Supporting DMPE is Andrew Chaplyn, who has been appointed as acting director general. Chaplyn was previously deputy director general of the Resource and Environmental Regulation Group within DEMIRS.

“Andrew brings more than 35 years of resources industry knowledge and experience to the role, from starting his career as a graduate mining engineer to holding senior leadership positions in government and the private sector,” DMPE said.

DMPE is one of 10 newly reshaped WA Government departments designed to strengthen the state economy, create jobs and build vital public infrastructure.

The WA Government first announced its plans to split DEMIRS into DMPE and the Department of Local Government, Commerce, Industry Regulation and Safety in April, following the 2025 State Election.

“Establishing these departments is an important milestone in implementing my government’s vision for the state,” WA Premier Roger Cook said.

“Government services are now structured in a way that brings together the skills and expertise of the public sector to best deliver for Western Australians in 2025 and beyond.

“I thank the staff and leaders of the departments for their ongoing commitment to implementing the reform and delivering high-quality services for Western Australians.”
