A "very unusual" crusher fault at Hillgrove Resources’ Kanmantoo copper mine is set to slow the project’s March production by around 20 per cent.

In a statement today Hillgrove said while its Kanmantoo development was "generally on schedule" an equipment failure in its secondary cone crusher was set to slow production.

The company said the Kanmantoo project was 4 months into a 4-6 month ramp-up and while the crusher fault would slow operations the hit was of "marginal concern".

Hillgrove said because failure of the crown gear on the crusher was so unexpected the fault was taking longer than usual to fix.

"Due to the nature of the failure, sourcing critical spares has taken longer than expected," it said.

In a statement Hillgrove managing director Drew Simonsen said while crushing performance had been "disappointing this month" there were no long-term unfixable issues at Kanmantoo.

The company said the cause of the fault was yet to be determined and it was in discussions with the original manufacturers.
