Traffic chaos as BHP equipment falls off truck [images]

A boom conveyor being delivered to BHP Billiton's Port Hedland facility in the Pilbara fell off a truck at 1am this morning, causing headaches for local commuters.

BHP Billiton said the accident occurred on the Great Northern Highway between Wedgefield and Finucane Island and local traffic was now being diverted.

Company officials are on site assessing the accident, but there are currently no details about the cost and extent of the damage.

It is understood the conveyor boom was destined for BHP's new reclaimer at Port Hedland.
