Tassie’s Greens say they support mining, sometimes

The Tasmanian Greens party says it supports mining, depending on the project.

Tasmanian Greens leader Nick McKim told The Advocate the party has supported a number of mining projects in the state, including King Island Scheelite’s redevelopment, a gold operation near the historic mining town of Moina, and the relaunch of Luina mine located in the Tarkine region.

But the party remains in opposition to Venture Minerals’ Mt Lindsay tin-tungsten project and Shree Minerals’ iron ore mine which is also located in the Tarkine area.

McKim said the party will support mining projects as long as the benefits are not overtaken by ecological impacts.

He explained the party looks at the long term implications of a project when deciding which side of the fence to stand on.

McKim said it is a misconception that the Greens are against mining and the party is currently formulating new mining policy which will address this.
