Superpit even bigger

THE biggest open pit goldmine in Australia is set to grow.

The Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) has recommended environmental approval for Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mine’s (KCGM) Fimiston Mine Extension.

The proposal is to expand the Fimiston operations in Kalgoorlie by widening and deepening the Superpit.

The cutback would allow for the widening and deepening of the pit to 600 m, covering a surface area of 46 hectares.

EPA chairman Barry Carbon was unsure what will happen with the super pit once mining has been completed.

“The mind boggles about the opportunities, but it is a big hole,” he said.
