A TEAM of University of Queensland (UQ) mining and minerals processing students have won the 2007 National Mining Games (NMG’s).
The group of nine UQ Bachelor of Engineering (Minerals Processing) students overcame a field of 25 teams representing eight Australian universities to win the NMG’s.
The event was coordinated by the student chapter of the Southern Queensland branch of the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (AusIMM) and held at UQ’s experimental mine in Indooroopilly over two days. Activities including rock drilling, the laying of railway tracks, mucking (shovelling gravel into a cart) and simulated blasting.
The team was sponsored by BHP Billiton Mitsubishi Alliance (BMA). Dr Basil Beamish, Senior Lecturer in Mining Engineering at UQ said the standard of competition was very high.
“This is a great way for students to gain real experience of mines, competition and team work prior to entering the workforce,” he said.
