Around 600 industry figures have so far attended the Queensland Mining Industry Health and Safety Conference, which opened in Townsville over the weekend.
The Conference’s chairman Stewart Bell said the attendance showed how important health and safety is regarded by the mining industry, the State Government and the unions.
“This year’s conference will focus on how we can provide the tools and deliver the mindset to keep the workplace safe and healthy,” he said.
Queensland Member for Thuringowa Craig Wallace said the conference confirmed the commitment of the industry to protect the health of miner workers.
“The industry is important to the economy of Townsville, providing avenues for skilled workers and essential services,” he said.
“Many mineworkers chose to base themselves in the city, so their health and safety is important.”
A range of papers dealing with leadership, work policies and design improvements for mining equipment will be presented at the conference.
The event, which runs until Wednesday, is hosted jointly by the Queensland Government, the Queensland Resources Council and mining unions.
