SOME of the best examples of gains in BHP Billiton Iron Ore’s Shipping Challenge have come from people taking a closer look at their own areas to se if they can make a difference.
One such group consists of Orebody 25 Geologist, Andrew Hine, and a small team investigating the amount of Fines material in Lump product from the mine.
Their objective was to work with the Newman Joint Venture (NJV) Inflow team to increase throughput at the port.
The team undertook belt sampling and test work at the mine and was able to narrow the problem of Fines material in Lump product down to two main ore sources within the various pits.
“By understanding the different physical properties of our various ore types here at Orebody 25 we have been able to control our Lump to Fine ratio and the amount of Fines in the Lump product,” explained Andrew.
“This has helped the port by reducing the amount of Fines which needs to be re-screened, thereby increasing the Net Loading Rates.”
BHP Billiton said this was another great example of work done by a small group of people which can have a significant impact on overall system capability.
“Well done to the team out at Orebody 25 for addressing this important issue,” the company said.
