Sandvik pioneers eco-efficient rock processing

By pushing the latest solutions in eco-efficient rock processing, Sandvik Rock Processing Solutions strives to meet the evolving needs of modern mining and quarrying operations.

Sandvik Rock Processing Solutions is a full-range equipment provider of crushers and screens, delivering end-to-end solutions that redefine efficiency and sustainability in mining.

Recognising that mining accounts for as much as six percent of global energy consumption, the global engineering company develops innovative technologies that not only reduce environmental impact but optimise performance and productivity at customer sites.

“One of the main aspects of our approach to eco-efficient rock processing is focusing on extending the crushing process,” Sandvik Rock Processing Solutions president Richard Harris said.

“This will decrease reliance on energy-intensive conventional grinding, which accounts for about 40 percent of the energy used in the comminution process, while significantly reducing overall energy consumption and operating expenses.

“Our message is clear: crush more – grind less.”

By working close to customers in optimising comminution circuits and incorporating the latest technology, Sandvik can move the transfer size between crushing and milling down towards six millimeters (0.24 inches), to enable a more efficient grinding processes.

Sandvik’s rock processing solutions can achieve up to 50 per cent greater energy efficiency compared to conventional grinding, while reducing CO2 emissions.

Harris believes increasing connectivity and introducing smart automation as well as monitoring systems will support customers in meeting their sustainability goals without sacrificing productivity.

“Sustainability is an essential component of modern mining operations,” Harris said. “We are committed to leading the industry toward a future where eco-efficiency is standard and not the exception.”
