Safety: the good, the bad and the ugly

A RECENTLY released report commissioned by the Safety Institute of Australia (SIA), has found that Australian industry’s reactive approach to OHS is leaving thousands of workers at risk.

The report, The Good, the Bad and the Ugly of Health and Safety in Australia, calls on the Australian Government to increase funding for injury prevention research, and develop a national approach to OHS reporting.

The report criticised the wide variation in the standard of content and delivery of TAFE OH&S, and the poor minimum training requirements for safety personnel in industry.

“The first step towards a better system would be for all stakeholders to meet and collectively review Australia’s current approach to occupational health and safety and commit to the adoption of a strategic approach to develop a national improvement strategy,” SIA National President Dr Geoff Dell said.
