SINCLAIR Knight Merz (SKM) and Rio Tinto personnel and contractors have set a safety record in the Pilbara region.
According to SKM, a number of safety initiatives helped the company achieve five million staff hours without lost time injury on the Rio Tinto Iron Ore Dampier Port Upgrade.
The company employed an off-site modularisation technique for the construction of the wharf which reduced the amount of work done over water.
The company’s Western Australia and Northern Territory regional manager Malcolm Greenway said the safety record has set a benchmark for other sites in the region.
“The modularised approach was adopted in response to critical labour shortages, combined with an unprecedented resources boom, which placed construction schedule pressure on the project,” he said. Greenway said the formulation of a safety committee helped resolve safety issues and trends.
