Rio Tinto doubles up with Swift, Empired contracts

Rio Tinto has contracted Swift Media as part of the miner’s strategy to provide entertainment systems at its workforce accommodation villages.

Under the agreement, Swift will install and commission Wi-Fi access points, and configure monitoring and management equipment.

Swift will deliver its services to more than 6600 rooms throughout the Brockman area, as part of stages three to six of the Rio Tinto standardisation and improvement program.

The content provider had won contracts from Iluka Resources, AngloGold Ashanti and modular solutions provider Ausco for a Rio Tinto bauxite project.

“We are pleased to announce this new engagement with Rio,” Swift chief executive Pippa Leary said.

“We have worked closely with Rio over 11 years and look forward to strengthening the partnership going forward. This agreement is central to our core strategy of leveraging our market leading position to drive growth in our key mining and resources vertical.”

The contract will fetch between $1–$1.5 million in revenues for Swift, on top of standard industry payment terms.

Swift expects to complete the project before the end of 2019 given the contract’s tight deadline.

Rio Tinto’s Greater Brockman hub is part of its iron ore project in the Hamersley Range in the Pilbara, Western Australia. The hub consists of two mines – the Brockman 2 and Brockman 4 mines.

The major miner has also awarded a five-year IT supply contract to Empired, which will provide services across its existing and newly defined service pillars.

Empired’s agreement has an initial three-year term, plus two one-year options for Rio Tinto to extend the relationship.

Russell Baskerville, managing director of Empired, said the company was proud to partner with “one of the most successful diversified mining companies in the world.”

“Together we have pioneered and delivered many world-class, technology solutions for Rio Tinto’s mining, processing and logistics operations across the globe,” Baskerville said.
