Resolute plots renewable energy project at Syama

Resolute Mining is set to partner with power generation provider Aggreko to develop a hybrid modular power station at the Syama gold mine in Mali, West Africa.

The power plant will combine solar, battery and thermal generation technologies in one integrated solution.

The partners will commence work in the current quarter. The new power plant will replace the existing diesel thermal generation at Syama with modern fuel oil thermal generation, increasing efficiency by around 30 per cent.

Once operational, the plant is expected to reduce Syama’s power costs by around 40 per cent and reduce its carbon emissions by 20 per cent.

Resolute managing director John Welborn said he was pleased the company had secured an innovative low-cost power solution for Syama.

“Identifying and adopting world class technologies to improve our operations is fundamental to achieving Resolute’s ambitions,” Welborn said.

“We are delighted to be partnering with Aggreko in delivering a lower cost and more environmentally friendly power solution for our Syama gold mine.

“Having worked together for several years, we know Aggreko is the right partner to support us as we integrate renewable energy into our Syama operation.”

The stage one project will involve installing three thermal energy modular block generators and a battery storage system.

This will provide 30 megawatts of power and incorporate an additional 10 megawatts Y-cube battery storage system, and is due for completion in 2020.

The second stage will see an additional 10 megawatts modular block installed and the construction of a 20 megawatts solar power system. This stage is expected to be complete by 2023 at the latest.

“Aggreko’s team is already familiar with Syama, having provided rental power solutions at the site since 2015,” Resolute stated.

The power solutions provider is also building a hybrid power solution at Gold Fields’ Granny Smith mine in Western Australia.
