Regional council throws support behind Carmichael project

Adani has struck a compensation deal with the Isaac Regional Council which will apply to infrastructure affected by the Carmichael project.

The agreement recognises that mining operations from the Carmichael Project will impact on council controlled roads and reserves.

Mayor Anne Baker said the deal had brought the Carmichael Mine a step closer to fruition.

“Our joint focus is to responsibly deliver mutual and long-term economic benefits for the community,” she said.

“This compensation agreement fundamentally provides Adani with access to Council roads and reserves integral to the project while maintaining public access.”

Adani CEO Jeyakumar Janakaraj welcomed the support of the local council, and their facilitation of a fast conclusion to negotiations.

“Working together with Isaac Regional Council, the project is moving one step closer to delivering long term benefits to Queensland, while helping deliver higher quality, lower emitting coal that will help alleviate energy poverty in India,” he said.

Mayor Baker expressed her support for the project, highlighting the loss of 20,000 jobs from the mining sector over the past two years.

“It’s essential our communities and our businesses benefit from the Carmichael project,” she said.

“Comprehensive maintenance agreements on existing infrastructure like road corridors are critical,” she said.

“The infrastructure agreement determines the extent of infrastructure works and maintenance over the life of the mine.”

Baker said the next step was to commence negotiations on an infrastructure agreement.
