The Queensland treasurer Curtis Pitt has said he will help Adani to get mining approval for the Carmichael coal mine, but points out there are still “gates to be gotten through”.
The Chronicle reported that six federal backbenchers called on Queensland to fast track licence approvals for one of the largest coal mines in the world, responding to the granting of federal environmental approval.
Pitt said the state government would “help where it can” however he also identified there were key hurdles to clear before approval of a mining licence would be possible.
These include current court cases with the Wangan and Jagalingou traditional owners as well as the Australian Conservation Foundation, and the need for the company to show proof of funding for the mine to enable consideration of mining approval.
"But we will do what we can to facilitate what we see is a terrific investment in this state," Pitt said.
"Like everyone, I'm hoping to see the potential job creation that the Adani Carmichael mine will bring."
Australian Mining has approached Adani for comment about their financial position on Carmichael.
