Queensland Mayor calls for reason on Adani’s Carmichael project

Queensland Mayor Anne Baker has called for “reason and sensibility” regarding the current debate surrounding Adani’s contentious Carmichael coal project in the Galilee Basin, central QLD.

The Mayor suggested that Adani was not the only company developing a new project in Queensland and that it was time for a “reality check” on the debate.

“At the end of the day Adani isn’t the only company developing a new mine in the Isaac region or the state of Queensland for that matter,” Baker said. “And they will be far from the last to do so.”

“Coal will continue to be a crucial part of the global energy mix alongside renewables, which are a growing industry in the Isaac region. With solar, wind and coal, the Isaac is helping to energise the world.”

The Mayor also reiterated her support for responsible development in the mining and resources sector, stating that the Council would ensure genuine benefits are realised and delivered for people and businesses.

“A win for those jostling to get fly in-fly out jobs does nothing for our region or, in fact, the State,” Baker added.
