A prospector in Queensland has discovered an enormous gold nugget weighing in at over 1.17 kilograms. The nugget was discovered by the anonymous man using a metal detector, which he found beneath some brush not far from Townsville. It has been evaluated as being worth nearly $64,000.
The man has declined to reveal the exact resting spot of the nugget, prompting social media speculation, but it was apparently found in the Charters Towers region, rather fancifully, beneath the intersecting peaks of a double rainbow.
The prospector intends to have the nugget independently valued and may return to the region to look for more.
In August 2016, a prospector in Victoria discovered an even larger 4 kilogram nugget worth $250,000.
