THE New South Wales Department of Primary Industries (NSWDPI) has released a safety warning following a number of electric shock s from hand-held power tools.
The incidents involved Class II (double insulated) 240 V alternating current hand-held power tools.
Contributing factors have included use of 240 V alternating current power tools and leads in an inappropriate environment, the ingress of water into tools, use of damaged tools, and not adhering to the tool manufacturer’s safety instructions, according to the NSWDPI.
The power tools were poorly maintained, with flexible leads in poor condition, and associated power outlets not correctly rated, according to the safety alert.
The alert also highlighted deficient contractor management practices as a cause of some shock incidents.
The NSWDPI recommends all mines to review the use of 240 V alternating current hand-held power tools at their site.
The alert suggests mines should consider assessment of all work environments where portable 240 V alternating current power tools may be used, to determine the suitability of the tool for the environment.
