Power shovel with AC drive

A MINING equipment supplier has introduced a new power shovel with AC drive technology to the oil sands region of Alberta, Canada.

This development is the result of a two-year project to integrate AC technology with an advanced supervisory control system.

The company’s mechanics and electricians commissioned the new AC-drive power shovel in March.

In more than three months running, the new shovel is said to have generated strong gains in productivity and availability.

The company’s project teams evaluated AC solutions that would offer reliability along with potential gains in material loading rates.

Early results are encouraging, with production rates more than 50% higher than requirements, with running averages of 96% availability.

The company’s DC drives will continue to be offered on all models.
