Despite recent job cuts, the expansion of BHP Billiton’s Olympic Dam mine in South Australia will still go ahead, chairman of the Olympic Dam taskforce Bruce Carter said.
With up to 35% of the world’s known uranium, the expansion of Olympic Dam is, According to Carter, only a matter of time.
“It will be dug, it will occur,” he said.
“It is just a matter of when.”
Earlier this months BHP cut 85 jobs from the Olympic Dam site and relocated a further 50 positions to Adelaide.
Such setbacks are only a bump in the road and Olympic Dam is a 100-year site, Carter said.
“There may be some delays and that is something that the BHP board will decide,” he said.
“But it (Olympic Dam) is there for the legacy of my grandchildren.”
