Data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics shows the Northern Territory’s exports have more than doubled in the last year.
The Territory’s goods trade surplus grew by $1.03 billion to $2.31 billion in the year to January.
The State’s Treasurer Delia Lawrie said overall exports had risen from $2.02 billion to almost $6 billion in one year.
“The strong rise in exports is on the back of higher production of alumina, iron-ore and manganese as well as Liquefied Natural Gas from the Wickham Point gas processing plant,” Lawrie said.
“The Northern Territory continues to become more of an export economy thanks in large part to our mining success.”
Lawrie said the Territory was currently leading the nation in economic growth.
“The growth in our State Final Demand in 2008 compared to 2007 was the highest of all the jurisdictions,” Lawrie said.
The Territory’s State Final Demand strengthened to 8.5% in 2008, more than double the national average of 4.1%.
