Xstrata has given the green light to a multi million dollar expansion at its Mt Isa mine.

The miner is planning the $247 million expansion at its George Fisher mine after being granted approvals from the Queensland Government.

It is aiming to increase production from 2013 by close to 30 percent, moving from 3.5 million tonnes per annum to 4.5 million tonnes.

This is on the back of a 120 percent increase in its zinc reserves since the project started in 2003.

The expansion is expected to create approximately 400 new jobs.
