Xstrata prepares for Cyclone Yasi

Xstrata Copper's Ernest Henry Mine preapres for the onslaught of Cyclone Yasi.

Miners across North Queensland are bunkering down as Cyclone Yasi approaches.

Xstrata’s Ernest Henry Mine general manager Myles Jonhnson said teams are working at the mine to ensure it is well prepared for any heavy rain from the cyclone.

"As a site base response, we’ve got a recovery and response team that have already assembled and we do a fair bit of preparation for wet season events every year," he said.

"We’ve been through that process and in response to Cyclone Yasi we’ve made efforts for our workforce, our fly-in, fly-out workforce, to return home to their families and prepare for the cyclone."

The copper gold focused Ernest Henry Mine also annouced the completion of its magnetite plant on site today.
