Worker killed at Rio Tinto’s Gove refinery

A man has been killed at Rio Tinto’s Gove refinery in the Northern Territory.

The 61-year-old fitter died while conducting maintenance at the site in north east Arnhem Land.

It is understood the man's son also works at the site and was one of the first people at the scene of the accident, NT News reported.

Rio Tinto says operations at the site have been halted, with all planned maintenance and non-essential refinery works closed for the next 24 hours.

The company has launched an investigation into the accident.

Worksafe NT has also begun an investigation but says the circumstances around the man’s death are unclear at this stage.

Rio said it was providing support to the man’s family and colleagues.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the employee’s family and colleagues at this time,” the company said.
