Female mining professionals are being paid 27 per cent less than their male counterparts.
Research released by the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (AusIMM) shows women in mining aren’t getting a fair go.
The report notes that female mining professions face a persistent gender pay gap.
It said the gap consist of lower wages than men doing the same work, and less access to career progression.
The research reveals the total gender pay gap for mineral professionals is 27 per cent, and that this increases with seniority.
AusIMM chief Michael Catchpoole said the gender pay gap in the mining sector was unacceptable.
“Mining companies who are recruiting and retaining the bext talent reap the long-term rewards of being an employer of choice,” Catchpoole said.
Chair of the AusIMM Women in Mining Network Lynn Olssen called on employers to address the gender pay gap as a matter of urgency.
“The single most important action employers can take to address the gender pay gap is to conduct a pay equality audit,” Olssen said.
“Organisations need to understand the extent of the wage disparity among their employees.
Companies can only take effective action to redress the imbalances when they are well-informed.”
