Whitehaven Coal restarts production at Narrabri coal mine

Whitehaven Coal has restarted longwall production at its Narrabri Mine following a longwall change out.

Whitehaven said the second longwall panel at Narrabri was completed in January, with production starting on panel three after the successful deployment of mining equipment.

The miner saw record production at its Narrabri operation in the December quarter, with the mine exceeding its nameplate capacity over a number of weeks.

While ROM coal production at the site was 3.29Mt for the first half, with saleable production 2.91Mt for the same period.

The company expects the mine to produce about 5.5Mt for FY2014.

Whitehaven managing director and CEO Paul Flynn said the success at Narrabri was impressive for a mine that had only been operating commercially for just eighteen months.

“Narrabri has reported strong performance with record production and sales for the half,” Flynn said.

“Longwall production in panel three commencing safely, on schedule and on budget is positive news and, significantly, moves the mine into a one change-out per annum mode of operation.”
