WDS wins massive Eagle Downs coal contract

WDS has been awarded the $142.8 million Eagles Downs drift construction contract by Aquila Resources.

The contract will see WDS construct two 2 kilometre long drifts on a decline down to a vertical depth of around 270 metres.

One of the drifts is for men and materials while the second is for a permanent mine drift conveyor to the Harrow Creek upper coal seam.

The contract also includes installation of all the permanent mine services pipelines, with WDS supplying ancillary equipment such as surface and underground ventilation devices, conveyor systems, and other mobile plant.

The drifts drivage will be completed using two 300kW roadheaders specifically engineering for the contract, as well as onboard roof-bolting and shotcrete tunnel lining.

WDS’s newest contract followings on from earlier work at Eagle Downs, which included the installation of the portal arches in early 2013 and a pilot mine degassing project completed in 2012.

This latest project workforce will peak at around 90 people.

Mobilisation will begin in the first half of next year with completion scheduled for the end of 2015.

Eagle Downs itself if a 254 million tonne reserve located in the Bowen Basin, and is adjacent to BMA’s Peak Downs coal mine.
