Watpac wins $80 million gold mine contract

Watpac has won an $80 million contract to deliver mining services at Hanking Gold’s new Axehandle mine.

The mine is part of Hanking’s Southern Cross Gold operations, located near Yilgarn in Western Australia.

Watpac will be responsible for the removal and stockpiling of topsoil, bulk excavation of overburden and ore using equipment sourced from its own fleet. The work will create 100 positions at the mine.

Watpac managing director, Martin Munro, said the new contract was the result of the company’s focus on enhancing relationships with key clients.

“Over the last 12 months, we have focused on quality outcomes for our civil and mining clients and this strategy has shown that a strong focus on relationships, local networks and operational excellence are valued despite a challenging market condition.” Munro said.

In August 2014, Watpac was awarded a $29 million contract to provide mining services for Hanking Gold's Cornishman Pit.
