Wall collapse at Rio mine

A land slip has occured at Rio Tinto’s Kennecott Utah Copper’s Bingham Canyon mine pit.

At 9.30 pm local time on April 10 the mine experienced a slide along a geotechnical fault line of its north eastern wall.

In a statement the company said movement along the wall had accelerated in recent weeks and pre-emptive measures were taken to relocate facilities and roads prior to the slide.

No one was injured and all employees are accounted for.

These events have suspended operations at one of the world’s largest mines while experts assess the extent of the slide and its impact on operations.
