WA miner dies of drug overdose

Police say a West Australian mine worker who died at a hotel in Uganda suffered from a drug overdose.

Christopher David Kirkman, 30, had been working at a gold mine in the Democratic Republic of Congo and was en-route home to Australia.

Uganda police Metropolitan spokesman Patrick Onyango told AAP that Kirkman arrived at Entebbe airport in Uganda on Friday, booked into the hotel and later collapsed in his room.

Another Australian man who also collapsed is recovering in hospital.

Onyango said early investigations found Kirkman died of a drug overdose.

Police have arrested a man in relation to allegedly supplying what are thought to be fake drugs.

“We have arrested one man who is alleged to have supplied the drugs to the Australian men,” Onrango said.

“The one who was taken to hospital is out of danger. We are still carrying out our investigations.”

Australia's Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade said it was providing assistance to Kirkman’s family.
