Engineering and environmental professional services firm URS has won the Australian Consulting Engineers Association’s national award for Education and Training for its 4sight Safe Behaviour Program.
According to the company, the provide employees with a simple and effective tool to help identify and control hazards at the worksite, and has resulted in the lowest recorded injury rate in the company’s history.
“I am very proud of 4sight as it was designed to solely empower our staff to look after themselves, and they have embraced it,” URS Asia Pacific health and safety manager John Petersen said.
“It doesn’t take enormous effort to change behaviour, but the outcomes, such as a safer working environment for our staff and a knowledge that URS supports them to question safety with our colleagues and subconsultants, are so beneficial and worthwhile.
“And that has been reflected in our improved safety record.”
The type of consulting conducted by URS employees exposes them to varied worksites, including offices, native bushland and forests, major hazard facilities and major construction sites.
4sight has equal importance at all types of worksites, Petersen said.
“Whether working in the field or in the office, 4sight has been developed so that it can be used by every URS employee every day for every task. It is the last minute safety assessment to help identify hazards before they become incidents,” he said.
“By just asking our staff to keep these four questions in mind, it has given them some very simple tools to put their safety and the safety of their colleagues and contractors to the fore.”
Originally developed in 2005, the 4sight program was and rolled out to 17 offices across Asia Pacific and since then has become the foundation of the behaviour based safety program for URS offices globally, impacting over 50,000 employees in Europe, the United Kingdom and the USA.
The 4sight handbook, a quick reference guide provided to all staff, is now available in Spanish, German, French and Chinese.
“This program has delivered real and sustained improvements in our safety performance across our own staff and our project teams,” URS Asia Pacific managing director David Williamson said.
