UNESCO listing on uranium deposit

UNESCO has granted World Heritage listing for Koongarra, a rich unranium deposit, in the Northern Territory.

The land will now be incorporated into the Kakadu National Park, the NT News reports.

Traditional land owner Jeff Lee had led the charge for its listing and was in Paris, France, for the annoumcent.

He told the ABC that French nuclear energy player Areva, which has exploration licences over the land, offered him a large sum for the land, but that “the land owned him, he didn’t own the land”.

The land is near Energy Resources Australia’s (ERA) existing Ranger uranium mines, in the Northern Territory.
