Underground collapse stops work at Birla Mount Gordon

Underground mining work has been suspended at Aditya Birla Minerals’ Mount Gordon copper mine following a collapse of the F1 vent shaft collar.

Recent heavy rains are believed to have undermined the collar, according to the company.

All miners were evacuated from the mine.

There were no injuries.

The underground mining works for the re-commencement of operations at the mine will remain suspended until a full investigation is carried out.

Miners will re-enter Mt Gordon once the risk to the underground operations and extent of the damage and repair needed it confirmed.

The mine is located in Queensland, approximately 120km north of Mt Isa at Gunpowder.

The operation can mine 1.2mtpa of ore from the Mammoth underground decline.
