Twenty die in Colombian coal mine blast

Twenty people have been killed and a further six injured following a mine explosion in north east Colombia.

The blast at the La Preciosa mine is believed to have been caused by a build up of methane gas inside the coal mine.

According to reports, a similar explosion at the mine killed 31 people in February 2007 and only four months ago six people were killed in a neighbouring mine due to a build up of gas.

The blast comes on the day of an inquest into New Zealand’s Pike River tragedy, in which a similar explosion occurred in an underground coal mine due to the build up of methane gases.–2
