There has been a third explosion at the Pike River coal mine.
This blast came almost a week to the very minute of the original explosion last Friday.
It occured at 3:39 local time, and lasted for approximately 20 seconds
Pike River chairman John Dow has confirmed this latest explosion, which was believed to be significantly smaller than the first two.
Fortunately, there were no people near the mine during this latest explosion.
Despite this latest setback, it will not change plans for the recovery of 29 miners.
Minute of Silence
This latest blast occured as the nation remembered the tragedy.
Family members at the mine were engaged in a minute of silence to commemorate those that were lost in the first blast a week ago today, and were later confirmed dead on Wednesday.
Omoto Racecourse in Greymouth will host a national memorial next Thursday, December 2, at 2pm.
