Thiess has been awarded a $760 million contract to operate Glencore’s Mt Owen coal mine.
The agreement extends what is already twenty years of operation at the coal mine.
“This contract enables Thiess to further build on two decades of continuous association with the MT Owen operations, and the mine owner Glencore,” parent company CIMIC’s CEO Marcelino Fernandez Verdes said.
“This award recognises Thiess’ ability to provide certainty of operations, whilst seeking out innovative ways to drive efficiency.”
Thiess managing director Michael Wright added that the contractor’s “ongoing work at this geologically complex mine is testament to the relationship between Thiess and Glencore”.
Thiess was first contracted to the site in 1995 to build the mine infrastructure, including the design and construction of the CHPP, offices, workshops, and additional facilities, after which it assumed responsibility for mining operations.
The site itself is currently mined at a depth of 270 metres, with ROM production rates of 7.6 million tonnes.
