Thiess win BHP nickel contract

Thiess has won the contract for work at the Rocky’s Reward nickel mine at Leinster.

The $160 million contract is set to run over 30 months, and will see Thiess provide turnkey mining services at the brownfields site, including mine planning, explosives, drill and blast services, overburden and ore mining, and overarching technical support.

Marcelino Fernandez Verdes, CEO of CIMIC Group – the parent company of Thiess – said this contract follows Thiess’ recent win in Chile and the copper market, and marks further diversification with a step into nickel.

Thiess managing director Michael Wright added: “The Rocky’s Reward contract, which marks out re-entry into the Goldfields region of WA, builds on the partnership we first established with BHP Nickel West at the nearby Mt Keith operations in 2003.”
