Thiess win $222m Peabody coal contract extension

Thiess has been awarded a contract extension for Peabody Energy’s Wilpinjong coal mine.

The $222 million contract extends work at the thermal coal mine until the end of March in 2013.

David Saxelby, Thiess’ managing director, welcomed the contract extension.

Thiess built the coal mine in 2006 and began mining in 2007.

Mining chief executive at Thiess, Bruce Munro, stated that they are looking forward to working to increasing coal production at Wilpinjong in 2012 as the next phase of CHPP expansion is brought on line.

The contractor is also looking to increase safety levels on site.

“On a number of occasion during the current term, the site has achieved more than 100 days recordable injury free while still hitting production targets,” Munro said.

Wilpinjong is located about 45km north east of Mudgee, in New South Wales.
