Super pit expansion

Kalgoorlie’s super pit is moving closer to expansion but the move has raised concern from local residents.

The Kalgoorlie Super Pit will become even larger when the Golden Pike extension begins in a fortnight’s time.

The expansion of the mine will bring it closer to the city, while making one of the world’s largest pits 4 km long, 1.6 km wide and just over half a kilometre deep.

However, local residents have expressed concern over the mine’s expansion despite the operator constructing a 20 m high noise bund to protect homes on the pit’s western edge from the worst of the constant operations.

The mine operator, Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines, said this expansion will be the last with the pit slated to close in 2021.
