Strong Under Pressure: Anaerobic Thread Sealants

There is a multitude of thread sealing and thread locking applications throughout the oil and gas industry, and conventional methods just aren’t holding up.

Air compressors develop high pressures and temperatures during operation, and when coupled with vibration, air leaks and threads loosening can occur anywhere throughout the system. When it comes to connecting air piping to newly purchased air compressors without using the proper chemical sealants, an air leak is inevitable and can cost an industrial plant operating at 8000 hours a year more than $12,500 in wasted energy, not to mention increased warranty costs.

In short, if leaking threaded fittings are commonplace in a typical air system, it won’t take long for the financial losses to rob the plant of operating cost efficiencies.

‘If it’s broke, FIX IT!’

Used commonly in the past as a thread sealant, Teflon taped threaded pipe fittings on oil and gas transmission valves that required adjustments during assembly would leak during post assembly pressure tests. As a result, the valve would need to be pulled from the line, reworked and then retested; slowing production output.

An undeniable need for a product that could easily and reliably seal the threads on fittings of gas transmission valves to eliminate leaks was unearthed.  A solution that would eliminate leaks would in turn minimise processing steps and labour requirements to assemble fittings; ultimately contributing to a company’s overall increased productivity and improved reputation within the industry.

Out with the old, in with the new

Anaerobic thread sealants prove to be much better performers in heat and stress environments compared to traditional thread sealants such as Teflon tapes; making them the most suitable solution in the oil and gas industry.

When LOCTITE© anaerobic thread sealants are applied to all pipe fittings during valve assembly, fittings may be repositioned before curing and easily pass post assembly pressure testing without leaking. This innovative product solution allows the oil and gas transmission valves to be produced at much lower costs by eliminating in-plant rework and customer warranty claims.

Industry giants such as Bechtel Oil, Gas & Chemicals Inc. and Chevron have both realised the benefits of using LOCTITE© anaerobic thread sealants. Chevron sought LOCTITE© 567™ Thread Sealant to prevent the leaking of gasses with simultaneous high gas pressures and high temperatures, resulting in all samples passing the test with no leaks.  Similarly, Bechtel required a thread sealant to perform as intended at liquid nitrogen temperatures, finding LOCTITE©565™ Thread Sealant to pass their test with no leaks.

To list just a few benefits, LOCTITE© anaerobic thread sealants cure rather than dry, so they won’t shrink or crack; eliminating leak paths and ensuring complete contact between the threads for a 100% seal. They are clean and easy to apply, can be used on various sizes of threads, do not creep, shred or block systems like PTFE tape, fill air voids to seal in liquids and gases, and protect threads from rust and galling; ultimately reducing inventory costs and lowering warranty costs.
