Springvale coal mine has won Australian Mining and Sandvik Mining and Construction Australia’s Movember competition for the best team of mining Mos.
The Movember charity sees men grow their best Mos and is designed to raise awareness of prostate cancer and other men’s health issues.
The charity has raised over $30 million since its formal inception in 2004.
The Springvale team wins a $500 cash prize from sponsor Sandvik Mining and Construction Australia, with a further $500 going to the official Movember charity.
Springvale was not only happy to participate, but to also raise awareness about men’s health, mine manager Terry O’Brien said.
“It certainly did raise awareness and we probably had about a third of the workforce participate,” he said.
According to O’Brien, the issue of men’s health is something that the team at Springvale takes very seriously.
“It starts through our Health, Safety and Environment committee,” he said.
“We put together a health and welfare and community program which targets the different areas of health, safety, environment and community.
“For the Movember fundraiser we had some professionals come in to talk about men’s health and prostate cancer, also male depression and our Employee Assistance Program.”
Both prostate cancer and depression are issues that have touched Springvale and the mining industry as a whole, O’Brien said.
“There’s always a few guys at the mine that have been through prostate cancer issues,” he said.
“Most of the guys know about that but they don’t know about the people that have been through depression issues.”
Springvale also took steps to spread the awareness beyond the mine site.
“We have a newsletter that goes out each quarter that which we send to the homes of all the employees,” O’Brien said.
“We also raised awareness with families through the newsletter.”
Australian Mining would like to thank Sandvik Mining and Construction Australia for their support, as well as Spitfire Communications, Nucrush, OZ Minerals Century Mine, Xstrata Copper — Ernest Henry Mining and Rio Tinto Alcan.
