Slain Rio miner named

The Rio Tinto miner killed this week has been named as Brent David Glew, of Canning Vale.

Friends and family of the man expressed shock and sadness at the man’s passing, describing the man as someone “who lived life to the full”, according to The West.

Glew was killed while working on a front loader at Rio Tinto’s Brockman 2 mine in the Pilbara.
He had previously worked as a HD fitter for Consolidated Minerals and as a diamond drill fitter for contractor Swick Mining Services.

Greg Lilleyman, Rio’s Pilbara operations head, sent a memo to staff yesterday at Glew’s former workshop saying it would remain closed and alternatives for servicing equipment are being considered.

He also told staff to “reflect on your own safety and that of your workmates”, adding the details of assistance programs for workers.

Operations at the Brockman 2 and Nammuldi mines slowly restarted yesterday.

Investigations by the Department of Mines and Petroleum and police, as well as an independent Rio investigation, are underway.
