Second coal mine application for Margaret River

Another application has been put forward to mine in Western Australia’s Margaret River region.

Western Coal has applied to the WA Department of Mines and Petroleum, despite fellow coal miner LD Operations’ Margaret River coal mine application being rejected on the grounds of being “environmentally unacceptable”, according to the ABC.

Western has applied for a lease that runs north of Margaret River and into the Shire of Busselton.

Head of the local No COALalition, Ian Parmenter, stated that they are facing a long term battle to keep the area free of coal mining.

"Well it’s a case of ‘here we go again’ and it’s just as we predicted that following the EPA’s decision on the first one it hasn’t put off the next lot," he said.
