Search for missing prospector called off

The search for a missing prospector in the WA Goldfields has been called off after emergency services failed to locate the man.

NSW-based Michael Graham, 46, went missing in bushland north of Menzies almost two weeks ago, and despite an extensive search, he has not been found.

Hopes were boosted last week after a Goldfields station owner discovered makeshift camps and SOS notes left by Graham.

Rescuers found SOS hacked into the dirt at a remote windmill, and 5km down a road the words “walking” and “very weak” had also been scraped into the ground.

It is believed Graham wandered off from camp during the night without water or navigation equipment, and while the search has been called off survival packs placed at strategic positions will be monitored for the next week.

Police said due to the extensive nature of the search, which involved trackers, air support, and mounted police, Graham would have already been found if he was still alive.
