A vehicle safety and speed monitoring system has earned Dampier Bunbury Pipeline (DBP) and WestNet Energy the Industry Choice Award at this year’s Safety & Health Innovation Awards.
Dampier Bunbury Pipeline (DBP) and WestNet Energy have developed a Vehicle Safety and Speed Monitoring System (VSSMS) in order to assist in improving driving behaviour which had been identified as a key risk to safety performance on the Dampier to Bunbury Natural Gas Pipeline (DBNGP).
The vehicles VSSMS component sends messages by satellite to a central unit where the location, date, time and speed data can be viewed on a computer both in table format and graphically superimposed on Google Earth Pro map and satellite imagery.
The VSSMS provides the driver with a panic alarm button should an emergency occur and is also used as a tool to modify behaviour, improving compliance with the project speed limits.
The Chamber of Minerals & Energy of Western Australia run the Safety & Health Innovation Awards.
